Welcome to Bavaria!

One could wonder if I’d secretly arranged a meeting with the local Weather Gods before we came over on a very long flight from Auckland to Germany about a week ago. And what a week it has been. Apart from two foggy days it’s been sunny but cold. At least at the southern end of Bavaria near Munich and the lovely Alps.

So far we explored some of the Christmas markets, went to a football match, (re-)acquainted ourselves with Munich and then yesterday we finally headed for the hills for the first time in quite some time.

Passing Lake Tegernsee our aim was the Wallberg. Since we only got there at around 12 PM and due to the very short days we opted for the lazy option by taking the cable car up (10.50 € one-way). We did want to walk down but we ended up liking it so much up there that we stayed until sunset. Not without scrambling to the summit though ;-) Absolutely lovely day.

And another awesome one today should follow. Thanks to Taxi Mama ♡

We drove all the way to Lake Achensee in Austria, then further on to Innsbruck to climb up to the ski jumping tower for lunch. The poor little city was being completely overrun with Christmas shoppers from Italy. Clogged every road into the city.

Not wanting to come back the same way we decided to then drive via Garmisch-Partenkirchen…to stop by another ski jumping tower. This was also the area where the recent “Eddie The Eagle” was filmed. The adjacent restaurant also featured in the movie and so of course we had to have a drink there. Quite cozy with amazing views over the stadium and the enormous tower.

A first week in Germany (and Austria) can hardly be any better than this.
